Aramco Teen Science Research Lab

 

Conduct research with museum curators, Dr. Dane Brooks, Dr. Nancy Greig, Dr. Carolyn Sumners, Dr. Dirk Van Teurenhout, and David Temple in this hands-on, weeklong course for teenagers. Students use scientific instruments, pose research questions, control variables and collect data in Museum halls and the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Labs include butterfly behaviors, light pollution, Native American clothing and home design, solar energy collection, bird adaptations, gravity’s effect on life, digging for fossils, impact cratering, and asteroid hunting. Friday’s activities will be at the George Observatory with optional evening stargazing with parents. Girl Scout Cadettes can earn their Night Owl badge and Girl Scout Seniors can earn their Sky badge in this lab.

 

Dates: July 14-18 and August 2-8, 9:30 am – 2:30 pm

Girl Scouts - Brownie Super Science

 

Earn five Brownie badges in one week while exploring the Museum, conducting science experiments, and making take home crafts. Each day is a different theme: the Cockrell Butterfly Center, how to conduct experiments, natural resources, problem solving like an engineer, and exploring with your senses. Girls earn the Bugs, Home Scientist, Household Elf, Inventor, and Senses Brownie Girl Scout badges.

Girl Scouts - Careers in Science: Summer Edition

 

Scouts will do real experiments and make discoveries in 5 areas: anthropology, energy, engineering, environmental science and space exploration. This program is a must for any girl who wants to be a scientist or just wants to see how much fun science can be. It's real science with real scientists. Meet the curators and staff of HMNS and go behind the scenes to learn what they do and how they do it. Girls will receive the exclusive HMNS Dino patch and the summer Careers in Science patch. Careers in Science: Summer Edition is for Juniors and Cadettes and is the week-long companion to the Saturday series.

Girl Scouts - Junior Super Science

 

Explore the Museum and meet the people that make it work. Conduct science experiments and building projects to take home. Each day is a different theme that focuses on engineering, wildlife and the environment, crime scene investigation, growing plants and investigating the function of flowers. Girls will earn the Product Designer, Animal Habitats, Gardener, Detective, and Flowers Junior Girl Scout badges.

Summer Scouts - After Class

 

After Class is for Scouts who need to be picked up late. Scouts enrolled in Late Pick Up can stay until 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Games and a movie will be available, but Scouts may also want to bring their own electronics or books.

Summer Scouts - Before Class

 

Before Class is for Scouts who need to be dropped off early. Scouts enrolled in Early Drop Off may arrive at any time between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM, Monday through Wednesday. Games and a movie will be available, but Scouts may also want to bring their own electronics or books.

Summer Scouts - By Air, Sea and Rail

 

Oceans cover most of the planet, influencing the weather, the land, and the air – learn what’s in the sea and on the ocean floor. Discover how a plane flies and how to plot your course. Take a trip downtown on Houston’s Light Rail and go on a full-day excursion to Galveston to visit the Lone Star Flight Museum, the Railroad Museum, and the Aquarium at Moody Gardens. Earn all requirements for these 3 badges in a jam-packed week on the move!

Take a virtual tour of the Lincoln Memorial and a trip on the Metro Light Rail to visit historical buildings in downtown Houston. Travel to Downtown and meet with a presiding judge to learn how a courtroom works and how disagreements are settled. With Heritage, research your family’s history and your own community. Discover how our Nation’s past has led to the present and what it means to be an American. Please note that Community eq. 7 – volunteer for 8 hours at an organization must be done on your own with your Troop leader’s approval.

Discover how computers work, what they can do for you and the history of computing as you test different home computer systems from the past 30 years. Create your own designs and see how the Museum uses graphic arts for its exhibits. Learn what makes the difference between a photograph and a snap-shot as you study lighting and picture composition.

Discover how crimes are solved and prevented in Houston while you earn the Crime Prevention, Law, and Fingerprinting Merit Badges. Meet with a lawyer and a Harris County crime scene investigator. Do experiments in forensic chemistry and biology. Visit the Magna Carta special exhibit to discover the history of our laws and take the Light Rail downtown to visit a courtroom in session.

Ready for some ‘Action!’? Discover everything you need to know about creating a cinematic masterpiece while writing, directing, filming and editing your own movie using one of the most unique venues here at HMNS, the Expedition Center Space Station! Also create your own short film using stop-motion animation. Then step into the shoes of a radio talk show host as you record a 30 minute broadcast including everything from news to weather, traffic to music. And to top it all off see how the pros do it when you visit the radio and television studios at Univision.

Learn the basic theory of nuclear science, the biological effects and hazards of radiation exposure, and the beneficial uses of radioactive elements. Learn about astronauts, the history of NASA, and how to design a colony on another planet. Investigate the stars and other celestial bodies in the Burke Baker Planetarium to find out how astronomers study the universe. While earning the Weather Merit Badge, you’ll discover the forces that create extreme thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes, plus a visit to the Weather Museum.
