| BTS - Real Pirates |
The slave ship Whydah began her short life in London, England, in 1715. After the Whydah unloaded her human cargo in the West Indies, notorious pirate Sam Bellamy and his motley crew captured the ship. Real Pirates showcases more than 200 Whydah artifacts, including treasure plundered from more than 54 ships, gold and silver coins from all over the world, Akan gold jewelry, weapons, personal belongings, the ship’s bell and its massive anchor. Tour this special exhibition with HMNS Master Docents while the exhibition is closed to the public. |

| BTS - Silk Road |
An impressive array of 150 objects are included in the Secrets of the Silk Road exhibition and represent the full extent of the Silk Road, where lavish goods, technologies and ideas between East and West were adopted and exchanged. The highlight of the exhibition is the strikingly well-preserved mummies dating back 3,800 years ago. Tall in stature and fair in complexion, the mummies were found in the Tarim Basin. Tour this special exhibition with HMNS Master Docents while the exhibition is closed to the public. |

| Genealogy 101 |
Genealogy is growing in popularity because of the interest in the pursuit of a personal past. This introductory class, led by genealogy research staff of the Clayton Library— one of the top five genealogy libraries in the United States—will focus on starting genealogical research by examining basic tools and research strategies. Learn about the different genealogical materials available to researchers and how they lead to other sources. On the second day, tour the Clayton Library, just six blocks from the HMNS, and receive an overview of their international genealogical research collections. The Clayton Library houses many passenger lists for many ports including Passenger Lists of Vessels arriving at Galveston—featured in the Forgotten Gateway exhibition. The Clayton Library collections include Galveston Passenger Lists 1846 – 1871 (Copies of lists of passengers arriving at miscellaneous ports….Atlantic…Gulf…Great Lakes…1820 – 1873); Galveston Quarterly Abstracts of Passenger Lists (1846 – 1871); Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Galveston, Texas (1896 – 1951); Galveston Passenger Lists (1895- 1921); Index to Passenger Lists of Vessels arriving at Galveston (1896 – 1906); Galveston Index to Passengers (1906 – 1951). Family History is the story of your life and the lives of your ancestors. Start researching your story now! Fall is a great time to kick-off a genealogy project—so you are ready to involve your family when gathered over the holidays. | The Path of Tea, A Silk Road Tea Tasting |
Since antiquity, tea was one of the most important and profitable commodities traded along the Silk Road, from Asia to the west, and then to other parts of the world. Thia McKann, certified tea master, has selected several teas associated with the Silk Road and the history of tea for this special tasting. Ms. McKann will share many interesting stories about the featured teas, explore tea customs of various tea-drinking cultures, explain some of the many varieties and their benefits, and demonstrate the best way to brew tea—all while you enjoy the exceptional flavors of the teas and tea treats.
